Hey! Look what arrived in the mail today. My print of the COOL DADDY RAT "Times Square" spread! Isn't Mike Lester talented? It really turned out great. The kids are all debating with me about where we should hang it.

And if that wasn't fun enough, my editor just informed me that COOL DADDY got a "starred" review from School Library Journal! It also received a starred review from Publishers Weekly! Hurray! I'm really excited!

CONGRATS Kris! I'm so excited!! We're, what? 10 days away from the release? Can you believe it? I still remember when you first sold it...the release seemed so unbearably far away. I can't wait to get my copy...you'll have to autograph it for me! :) Love you!

Plan A FABULOUS Literacy Night!

Creating enthusiasm for reading is one of the greatest things a school can do for its students. Well-planned Literacy Nights, where parents attend with their children, can boost that enthusiasm enormously. As a picture book author, I’ve had the opportunity to attend numerous literacy events at elementary schools. Some were a raging success, and others fizzled. I’ve paid close attention to what I feel worked and what didn’t. Without naming any particular schools, I thought I’d share my observations. Ideas that Worked : 1. Cheap Dinner : Serve a free dinner at the school to start off the night – such as hotdogs and chips. The most recent literacy night I attended offered this cheap hotdog dinner on a first come, first-served basis. The response was overwhelming, and the school was packed.
